Jim Larranaga is a great coach who is more than used to make chicken salad without chicken. The only two seniors at roster are Davon Reed, who leads the team in scoring with 15 PPG, and Kamari Murphy, who leads the team in rebounding with 7.5 RPG. The Hurricanes can and will switch to zone to mix things up on defense, and that tactic worked very well against top teams in the ACC. Defense allowed Miami to get much needed wins against North Carolina, Duke and Virginia. The Tar Heels got their revenge in the ACC tournament, but the Hurricanes can still pull off a win against a top team.
There are no Nba-level talent at roster, but there are plenty of players that will have long careers overseas. Among them, PG Ja’Quan Newton has a great feel for the game, and forward Kamari Murphy might not have the best footwork or the best size to battle against other frontcourt players but is as solid and reliable as it gets. The most exciting player on the team, however, is freshman Bruce Brown, who has been playing better as the season went on and can change the game with his shooting.
A win in the first round seems likely. From there on it will be an adventure, but they sure are not one of the top 16 teams in the game, at least on paper.
